Biographical Notes, 2004

My name is Walter Baron. I was born in Chicopee, MA, on July 15, 1948. I went to Assumption School for elementary school, then to Chicopee High School, graduating in 1966. I attended Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, for 4 years. I graduated in 1970. While at RPI, I met Jane Baker. We were married in September 1970, and settled in Wellfleet, where we have lived since.We Have two children- Otis, born in 1973, and Nicolas, born in 1976. I have worked as a painter, carpenter, and commercial fisherman. I taught myself to build boats, and have been a boatbuilder since 1977.

I started in photography when I was 18 or 19 years old, making 35mm contact prints from a photography kit. I built a darkroom in my father's cellar, the first of several built in various college and Cape Cod apartments. I became seriously interested in photography in college, participating in local shows, and becoming a photo editor for the college yearbook. I photographed for the Boston Phoenix in the summer of 1970. In 1972 or '73, I had photographs in the Cherrystone Gallery in Wellfleet, then on Railroad Ave. I also had a few in the Cape Codder. Then came children, and house-building, and learning to be a boat-builder. I did not photograph seriously for twelve years.

When I was 38, I decided it was time to get going again in photography. In the past years I have won several grants and awards, and have had my work published in many local, regional, and national publications. I have also had my photographs shown in galleries from Provincetown to Boston.Currently, my work is being shown in Wellfleet at the Kendall Gallery, Wellfleet Crafts Gallery, and the Harmon Studio Gallery
